Carlos Solari, the legendary voice of Patricio Rey y los Redonditos de Ricota, once declared: \u201cThey say I\u2019m a \u2018K,\u2019 and yes, I\u2019m a bit of a Kirchnerist, just as I\u2019m a bit of a communist, a bit of a socialist, and a bit of a Peronist.\u201d Consequently, this cultural death had a profound impact on those in power and on public opinion. He was 77 years old and had been living with Parkinson\u2019s disease for a decade; the cause of death was a cerebral hemorrhage resulting from a hypertensive crisis. <strong>Solari had not given a concert since Olavarr\u00eda 2017<\/strong>\u2014that show attended by 300,000 people that ended with two deaths.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet his death sparked a mobilization in Plaza de Mayo between Friday, June 5, and Saturday, June 6\u2014a historic funeral ceremony\u2014and also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minutouno.com\/espectaculos\/la-transmision-especial-c5n-indio-solari-lo-mas-visto-del-domingo-como-fue-el-rating-n6286125\">took over television 24\/7<\/a> and social media. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-tiktok wp-block-embed-tiktok\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"tiktok-embed\" cite=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@el_profe_david_nesher\/video\/7648856940415569173\" data-video-id=\"7648856940415569173\" data-embed-from=\"oembed\" style=\"max-width:605px; min-width:325px;\"> <section> <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"@el_profe_david_nesher\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@el_profe_david_nesher?refer=embed\">@el_profe_david_nesher<\/a> <p>\ud83c\udde6\ud83c\uddf7 El <a title=\"pogo\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/pogo?refer=embed\">#pogo<\/a> m\u00e1s grande y la fila m\u00e1s larga del mundo. Javier Milei is the figure who generates the most digital conversation in Argentina. Measuring \u201cIndio\u201d against that benchmark allows us to see the true scale of what happened. We had to filter out some mentions of the word \u201cIndio\u201d because it drew in a few other results that weren\u2019t relevant (due to the word\u2019s other meanings), but these were very marginal.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Crushed for twelve months; one week \u201clike a diver\u2019s fart\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the course of twelve months, President Milei clearly outpaced \u201cIndio\u201d Solari in volume: 39.7 million mentions versus 2.3 million, a ratio of about seventeen to one. The singer barely registered\u2014between five and thirty thousand authors per week\u2014a nearly flat line at the bottom of the graph.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he died. That week, El Indio drew 1.17 million unique authors; Milei, 674 thousand. For the first time in the period, a musician displaced the president from the center of the conversation. <strong>The peak was more than thirty times the average of his previous weeks.<\/strong> Paraphrasing President Javier Milei, who predicted that the Argentine economy would rise \u201clike a diver\u2019s fart,\u201d we can say the same of mentions of the singer (the original Spanish, \u201ccomo pedo de buzo,\u201d uses \u201cpedo\u201d in this country as a synonym for drunkenness, but it also means flatulence, while \u201cbuzo\u201d here means someone who goes diving).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn\u2019t a campaign push or a government scandal: it was a period of mourning. <strong>The fact that a death can reshape\u2014even if only for a few days\u2014Argentina\u2019s digital agenda says little about the algorithm and a lot about what that name meant.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who mourned him on social media: mourning across social divides<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conversation also reveals who spoke out. And the first thing that stands out is its breadth. Looking at their occupations, the people who mentioned \u201cEl Indio\u201d range from the classroom to the sports field: journalists, yes, but also students, athletes, lawyers, teachers, and artists. <strong>It goes beyond the very contemporary category of <em>fandoms<\/em> or fans of a particular musical genre: it is a cross-section of the country\u2019s active life.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"492\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lucasmalaspina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/grafico-ocupaciones.png?resize=1024%2C492&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lucasmalaspina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/grafico-ocupaciones.png?resize=1024%2C492&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lucasmalaspina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/grafico-ocupaciones.png?resize=300%2C144&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lucasmalaspina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/grafico-ocupaciones.png?resize=768%2C369&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lucasmalaspina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/grafico-ocupaciones.png?resize=1536%2C738&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lucasmalaspina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/grafico-ocupaciones.png?resize=1200%2C576&amp;ssl=1 1200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lucasmalaspina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/grafico-ocupaciones.png?w=1628&amp;ssl=1 1628w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other lens\u2014that of interests\u2014confirms the same thing from a different angle. El Indio brings together journalism, politics, music, motherhood, rock, law, and soccer in almost equal measure: <strong>a map of everyday attachments<\/strong>, not of a niche. A somewhat more balanced audience.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sociologist and anthropologist Pablo Sem\u00e1n and former National Secretary of Culture Pablo Avelluto (2018-2019) both interpreted the phenomenon as cross-class and multigenerational: a meeting point that cuts across classes, occupations, and ages. El Indio received twice as many positive mentions as Milei (14.8% versus 7.4%) and had fewer negative mentions (31.4% versus 37.4%). <strong>In a country accustomed to measuring everything through the lens of political division, the conversation surrounding his death was, comparatively, more affectionate.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"384\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lucasmalaspina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/grafico-sentimiento.png?resize=1024%2C384&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lucasmalaspina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/grafico-sentimiento.png?resize=1024%2C384&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lucasmalaspina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/grafico-sentimiento.png?resize=300%2C112&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lucasmalaspina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/grafico-sentimiento.png?resize=768%2C288&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lucasmalaspina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/grafico-sentimiento.png?resize=1536%2C576&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lucasmalaspina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/grafico-sentimiento.png?resize=1200%2C450&amp;ssl=1 1200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lucasmalaspina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/grafico-sentimiento.png?w=1548&amp;ssl=1 1548w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that negative third is not noise. El Indio\u2019s death also became a battleground. <strong>The government refused to make the Casa Rosada or Congress available for an official tribute<\/strong>; the massive farewell ceremony was ultimately organized in Avellaneda\u2014at the \u201cMono\u201d Gatica Sports Complex\u2014through the efforts of Buenos Aires Province Governor Axel Kicillof and La C\u00e1mpora leader M\u00e1ximo Kirchner, who is very close to the singer\u2019s family. Given the exploratory nature of this analysis, we did not perform sentiment classification focused on the object\u2014what is commonly called\u00a0<em>object-based sentiment<\/em>. This distinction is key: a negative mention could express sadness over the death, anger over the organization of the tribute, criticism of the government, a recollection of Olavarr\u00eda 2017, or explicit rejection of Indio himself. Therefore, the sentiment data should not be interpreted as an exact proportion of support or rejection, but rather as an indicator.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Object<\/th><th>Sentiment<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Indio Solari<\/td><td>Positive \/ admiring<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Death event<\/td><td>Negative \/ painful<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><br\/>The precise distinction in sentiment emerges when we distinguish general sentiment from sentiment toward the specific object<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"has-blanco-roto-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">From within the ruling party and libertarian circles, some voices downplayed his significance: a businessman who, they said, sold rebellion to the masses, as can be seen in the tweet by Nicol\u00e1s M\u00e1rquez (one of the intellectuals closest to the La Libertad Avanza government and Milei\u2019s biographer). <strong>The president himself<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/elruido.org\/el-insulto-como-estrategia-analisis-de-113-000-tuits-del-presidente-milei\/\">whose frequency of posting content on X is among the highest of any head of government worldwide<\/a> (from 12\/10\/2023 to 09\/15\/2025, he generated 3,412 original posts and 110,237 reposts, averaging approximately 176 posts per day over that period), <strong>remained completely silent on the matter, something journalist Rolando Gra\u00f1a noted when he said that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/sNfE-G48Hfc\">the \u201cgovernment was very uncomfortable\u201d with the death and the massive expressions of affection<\/a>. <\/strong>This was striking for President Milei\u2019s followers, given that he may be the \u201cmost rock-and-roll president in the world\u201d (you can see my analysis of this contradiction here). <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MenemMartin\/status\/2062977225281134714\">The libertarian president of the National Chamber of Deputies, Mart\u00edn Menem, was one of the few to make a brief statement<\/a>, offering his condolences and, in response to a request from the Peronist-Kirchnerist parliamentary bloc, explaining that according to the government there were no conditions for holding the wake in the National Congress (<a href=\"https:\/\/tn.com.ar\/politica\/2022\/07\/25\/la-historia-del-multitudinario-velorio-de-eva-peron-a-70-anos-de-su-muerte\/\">although the funeral ceremony of Eva Duarte de Per\u00f3n, \u201cEvita,\u201d was held there and drew a much larger crowd<\/a>). This adds weight to Gra\u00f1a\u2019s thesis, and the result was that the funeral on Sunday, June 7, was organized in the southern part of the metropolitan area surrounding the City of Buenos Aires, specifically in the municipality of Avellaneda, led by the Peronist-Kirchnerist Jorge Ferraresi. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-x\"><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">Revent\u00f3 el empresario kirchnerista Carlos Solari. <br>Gran mercader en la industria de la rebeld\u00eda, su producto jam\u00e1s traspas\u00f3 siquiera fronteras de pa\u00edses lim\u00edtrofes ni innov\u00f3 jam\u00e1s g\u00e9nero musical alguno. Although his organization \u201cArgentina Humana\u201d did so, Juan Grabois, a presidential hopeful from the same political bloc, did not post anything online but did participate in the procession in the municipality of Avellaneda. The star of Argentine Trotskyist communism, Myriam Bregman\u2014who is currently the political leader with the most positive public image in the country\u2014recalled the singer during an event of the Frente de Izquierda y de los Trabajadores-Unidad (FITU): \u201cIt was the only mass I attended\u201d (referring to the term used for ricotero concerts). <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The polarization, which the mourning period seemed to suspend, resurfaced in the fine print.<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A cultural death beat day-to-day politics.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For a week, the mourning for a musician generated more conversation than the President who dominates the scene all year round. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Ricotera community is still there, broad-based and ready to mobilize.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It spans classes, genders, and generations. It is not a niche tribe but a massive, latent audience, capable of mobilizing peacefully and on a large scale.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The mourning was, at the same time, a political mirror.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The mobilization was very Argentine: it also included a celebration of Solari\u2019s art.
